Formula One Champions Mercedes to Use Black Cars in Stand Against Racism

Formula One champions Mercedes unveiled black-liveried automobiles for the 2020 season on Monday as a part of a public pledge to additional enhance variety inside the staff and the world of motorsport.

Mercedes have historically raced in silver all through their time in Formula One however will swap to black and have ‘Finish Racism’ emblazoned on the halo of each automobiles.

The staff stated the Black Lives Matter motion has “shone a searching light on how much we need new measures and actions in the fight against racism and all forms of discrimination”.

The brand new livery will make its debut when Britain’s world champion Lewis Hamilton and Finnish staff mate Valtteri Bottas characteristic in the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.

“Racism and discrimination have no place in our society, our sport or our team: this is a core belief at Mercedes,” Mercedes staff principal Toto Wolff stated in a press release.

“But having the right beliefs and the right mindset isn’t enough if we remain silent.

“We want to use our voice and our international platform to converse up for respect and equality, and the Silver Arrow will race in black for your entire 2020 season to present our dedication to larger variety inside our staff and our sport.”

Mercedes said only 3% of their workforce identified as belonging to minority ethnic groups, while just 12% are women.

The team plans to launch a diversity and inclusion programme before the end of the season as they look to improve those numbers and encourage more people from under-represented backgrounds into Formula One.

Six-times Formula One champion Hamilton said: “It is so vital that we seize this second and use it to educate ourselves whether or not you’re a person, model or firm to make actual significant modifications when it comes to guaranteeing equality and inclusivity.”
